Lighter than air,
Installation 2017

Lighter than air is a staging of a contemplation about the fragility of power and identity.

This installation is composed of a lit room within a darker space, its metal studding structure just visible on the outside.  Light emanates through holes in the walls barely illuminating the dimly lit main space. The walls of the interior room are built with 2 layers of plasterboard giving the interior it’s bare grey appearance.  Holes have been drilled through the plasterboard walls and ceiling permitting the light to project outside. The resulting white plaster powder spills down the grey surface of the walls inside, collecting in a thin layer of dust on the floor, revealing phantom like images of coats of arms lightly etched in its unfixed and vulnerable powdery Rorschach shapes.

These symbols and motos of lasting virtue and clan identity are completely exposed to the viewers physical presence, threatening their destruction due to their impermanence and instability.

Oh Little Star of Bethlehem,
March 1999

Oh little star of Bethlehem was a nighttime installation. I badly parked a Mercedes 500 outside of the Serge Aboukrat Gallery on the Place Furstemberg in Paris. Images of skies evocative of German romantic paintings, were projected from the interior of the car through the star on the bonnet of the Mercedes, through the gallery window, and onto its back wall. Meanwhile, a recording of the song ‘Oh little star of Bethlehem’ by the German psychedelic group CAN was playing in a loop on the car radio whilst the chauffeur was polishing and preening the car. The installation lasted one night. I decided some time later to transform these skies into images made of dust that became the series Romantic skies in my own dirt or Himmelskörper.

Dusk Garden (2000-2001) — Unseen

“Speaks truth who speaks shadow”. Paul Celan.

This garden was conceived in memory of the mecenes father who died at Ausschwitz.

The idea is to make Islands of Light. The light is charged during the day, the surface being covered with a material sensitive to ultra violet light,  and emitted at night. The islands will glow for up to eight hours. The islands will allow people to sit and relate; if they stay during sunset and dusk they will leave a shadow of themselves (this refers back to the notion of absence that runs through a lot of my work). The plants on the island itself, will be almost translucent and others in silhouette. Leaves and or branches that are moved after dusk will also leave a shadow, photographic in nature.

The size is approximately 5 metres across.

Pavillon (2004) – Unseen

“Other people’s feelings are also my own…”(2003) is a photographic and video work in progress. In these double portraits depicting myself, the artist, and the sitter side by side, I strive to research as closely as possible the inner posture and emotion of the sitter. For me, these portraits are about the way we inhabit each other, reside in each other, and how we always leave traces in each other. They go against the grain of the squeaky clean’individual’, idealized in our capitalist system, the alienated vehicle targeted for consumption, that generates the fear of the other. I interpret the other’s emotion to blur the dividing line between sitter and artist, to counter the usual game of representation in the tradition of portraiture, as the interpretation is made physically manifest within myself, the artist. It is not about mimetism but empathy. It is not about extreme emotions but nuances of apparent normality. It is above all a celebration of you and I, right here, right now and forever ; an attempt to get beyond representation, artefact, and interface.

Pavilion is an architectural structure that allows the projection of these portraits on the inside wall of a large circular space which has, at its centre, another smaller circular space where the spectators can meet. A luminous surface covers the central space, which permits the spectator to dissociate himself from his shadow.

“More conspiracy than not” was a dinner I organised for the Coromandel Press issue ‘EAT’. Four ladies and four gentlemen were invited and the whole was conceived as a painting, a composition of characters, personalities and egos. I did not invite myself as I did not want to determine the form the evening could take; I reserved myself the honour of serving instead. A chef whom I have known for some time by the name of Gilles prepared the food. All the guests had a tie microphone and everything they said was recorded for the duration of the dinner. When the dinner was over the table was abandoned with all the food and the drinks left on it. I then photographed and filmed the deterioration of the food over a period of three weeks, after which the neighbours began to complain about the smell. The resulting film has the voices over the rotting food but the guests themselves are absent. This piece was originally conceived as an installation where the voices would be played back over the rotting food, as a kind of Vanitas.

Kissing Columns (2002) – Unseen

This is a model for a sound installation where the columns in a huge classical space are looped from floor to ceiling, vertically, with magnetic sound tape that plays the sound of two people kissing. This intimate sound undermines and plays with the classical imposing structure and its aesthetics of power and authority as the tape mimics the form of the columns.

The difference between chocolate and leather (1995)

Parc Saint Léger, Pougues-les-Eaux, France

‘On the Beach’ features one skin colored carpet, 4m x 5m, two chocolate saddles, two hand made leather seats 65cms x 150cms, the same color as the chocolate saddles, with metal legs, of the kind one might find in a modernist reception room.   One of the saddles lies upside down on one of the seats, whilst underneath the other seat lies a large glass ashtray.  Another chocolate saddle lies on the carpet facing two cream coloured corporeal carriers with straps, possibly to hold the saddles when being used.  These carriers are mounted on tripods.  On the wall are two large18th century landscapes by Hodges made with domestic dirt, the artist that accompanied Captain Cook’s voyages in the South Pacific.

Markus Hansen’s ‘crisis cabin’ is reminiscent of the Black Forest log cabins.  No nails, screws or glue are used in its assembly as every piece slots together to facilitate it’s mobility.  It’s exterior is covered with feathers to protect against the rain. The entire structure is made of 22mm plywood and has a system of shelves on the inside that slot into the rest of the structure and holds it together. The books that fill the shelves isolate against the cold and are the source of reinvention and regeneration. The feather cover reminds us of the unavoidability of a dialogue with nature for our survival whilst the lining of books serve as a resource of the past for the future.
