Jim’s Last Round explores notions of masculinity and gender in the form of a film noir comedy, a cinematographic contradiction in terms. Set in a bar in the early hours, it stages a confrontational encounter between two customers, a dramatisation of male intimidation and humiliation, witnessed by the barman. Jim, who never appears, acts as the symbol of male adhesion, togetherness and fraternity whilst simultaneoulsy serving as a tool of conflict and aggression. The final outcome of the fight is comically twisted so as to reverse the roles of the masochist and the sadist, casting a fundamental doubt on the values represented by Jim and his two creators, the last clients in the bar.
