Mirror Hides

The image objects show framed seventeenth and eighteenth-century mirrors with their ornate frames. The Mirror Hides are ‘mute mirrors’ — images created by contrasting the direction of hairs in cow hide. The reflection of light off the hide’s hair evokes a desire – namely of seeing oneself in the world – that cannot be satisfied. The highly tactile, natural material of cow hide, transformed into an image of a mirror, affords a visual and physical contemplation on culture and nature.
