DANS LE CADRE DE L’ÉPIPHANIE

There is a curved space in the Évry Cathedral behind the choir, between the exterior and the interior wall, (4m wide by 30m long) with twenty high and narrow windows looking out onto the esplanade. I covered the windows leaving only a a small hole in the middle of four of the windows. This transformed the whole space into a gigantic walk in Camera Obscura. The exterior was projected onto the interior walls. To begin with you see and hear nothing and then images appear slowly upside down and with them a sound track.

Mario Botha’s cathedral being without windows, impenetrable in appearance from the outside, I wanted to project what was generally perceived as being ‘ugly’, i.e. the immediate surroundings of the cathedral, onto the real walls of the cathedral, like a luminous graffiti, a site specific cinema projection in real time, thereby creating a new link between this cathedral and the surrounding ‘new town’ in full evolution and construction.

Il y a dans la cathédrale d’Évry un espace courbe derrière le chœur, entre le mur extérieur et le mur intérieur, (4m de hauteur, 30m de longueur), percé de vingt grandes fenêtres qui regardent une vaste esplanade. J’ai obscurci ces ouvertures et seulement laissé quatre petits trous au milieu de quatre d’entre elles.  L’espace tout entier est ainsi transformé en camera obscura où le spectateur déambule. L’univers extérieur se projette sur le mur intérieur et apparaît tout à fait précisément mais à l’envers. Au début, on ne voit rien et on n’entend rien et puis on découvre des images animées et une bande-son…
Le corps de bâtiment principal de la cathédrale de Mario Botta n’étant doté d’aucune fenêtre, ne communiquant avec l’extérieur que par son gigantesque toit en verre, j’ai voulu rapprocher, projeter les environs immédiats, généralement décrits comme “laids” à l’intérieur du bâtiment, sous forme de graffiti lumineux, projection cinématographique in situ et en temps réel, créer un nouveau lien entre cette église et cette ‘ville nouvelle’ en pleine évolution et construction.
