“More conspiracy than not” was a dinner I organised for the Coromandel Press issue ‘EAT’. Four ladies and four gentlemen were invited and the whole was conceived as a painting, a composition of characters, personalities and egos. I did not invite myself as I did not want to determine the form the evening could take; I reserved myself the honour of serving instead. A chef whom I have known for some time by the name of Gilles prepared the food. All the guests had a tie microphone and everything they said was recorded for the duration of the dinner. When the dinner was over the table was abandoned with all the food and the drinks left on it. I then photographed and filmed the deterioration of the food over a period of three weeks, after which the neighbours began to complain about the smell. The resulting film has the voices over the rotting food but the guests themselves are absent. This piece was originally conceived as an installation where the voices would be played back over the rotting food, as a kind of Vanitas.

“More conspiracy than not” fut d’abord un dîner, une installation organisée à l’occasion d’une publication de Coromandel Press dont le thème était ” Eat “. Quatre femmes et quatre hommes furent conviés et l’ensemble conçu comme un tableau, une composition de personnalités et d’ego. Ne voulant pas influencer le déroulement de la soirée je me suis réservé l’honneur de servir. La nourriture était préparée par un chef. Les invités avaient un micro-cravate et leurs conversations furent enregistrées pendant toute la durée du repas. Quand le dîner fut terminé, la table fut abandonnée avec les reliefs du banquet. Pendant les trois semaines suivantes, j’ai photographié et filmé la détérioration des mets et des boissons jusqu’à ce que les voisins commencent à se plaindre de l’odeur. Le film montre la nourriture pourrissante tandis qu’on entend les convives toujours en train de converser. Des extraits des conversations et des photos furent publiées dans ‘EAT’. Cette œuvre fut à l’origine conçue comme une installation où les voix seraient rejouées par-dessus la nourriture pourrissante, comme une sorte de Vanitas.
